Here is an example of an horse-based problem solving activity that is commonly used with families to help show a family's non-verbal communication.  At the end of the activity, the counselor can help the family evaluate the problems they had and work on ways to improve family communication.

THE PROBLEM:   A horse is loose in the arena.  How do you get him to jump a jump in the center of the arena?

THE RULES:

  • No touching the horse
  • No bribing the horse with treats
  • No yelling at the horse
  • No talking to one another - only non-verbal communication
  • No scaring the horse

GOOD LUCK!!

This is just one example of the many individual and family-based activities that can be created around the client's individual needs and specific trouble issues.
